                         INDIA- SIZE AND LOCATION  

Location-

1) India is located in northern hemisphere.
2) It lies between the latitude- 8°4’N and 37°6’N and longitude- 68°7’E and 97°25’E.
3) Tropic of Cancer is an imaginary line, at an angle of 23.5 degrees North from the equator, that passes through the middle of India.
4) Andaman and Nicobar Island ( union territory of India ) lies to the Southeastern coast of India in Bay of Bengal.
5) Lakshadweep Island ( union territory of India) lies to the Southwestern coast of India in Arabian Sea.

Size-

1) Area of India is 3.28 million square kilometers.
2) India occupies 2.4% of total land area of the world.
3) It is the 7th largest country in world.
4)India shares its 15,200 km land boundary with neighbouring countries.
5)The total length of the coastline of the mainland, Lakshadweep Islands and Andaman and Nicobar Islands is 7,516.6 km.
6) 2 hours of time lag between Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh, due to the longitudinal extent of India.
7) Time along the Standard Meridian of India - 82°30’E passing through Mirzapur in UP is taken as the standard time for the whole country.

India and the world-

1)The Indian landmass has a central location between East and West Asia. India is a southward extension of the Asian continent. The trans Indian Ocean routes which connect the countries of Europe in West to the countries of East Asia provide a strategic central location to India.
2)Position of India helps to establish close relations with other countries. 
3)India’s relationship through the land routes are much older than its maritime contacts. The various passes across the mountains in the North have provided passages to the ancient travellers, while the oceans restricted such interaction for a long time.
4) The exchange of ideas and commodities between India and the rest of the world since ancient times is due to the fact that the passes between the mountains and the sea routes enabled trade and the spread of Indian ideas in the rest of the world.
5) India’s neighbouring countries are Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, China, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh.
